“Apple is definitely working [on a] portable music player with communication capabilities.”  — Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer

This revelation during a conference call with market analysts has sent the rumor mill into double overdrive.  There had already been rumors that Apple is ready to introduce - fanfare please - the new iPhone!  There have been mysterious discoveries in software code.  Phony ads.

Parse Oppenheimer’s words - does “communication capability” necessarily mean a phone?  Or just an iPod that can download music and video wirelessly via WiFi or some other means?

Estimates on when we might see this device (whatever it is) range anywhere from the next 18 minutes to the next 18 months.  In the wake of announcements of Microsoft’s upcoming wireless Zune media player, it would be only logical for Apple to respond by teasing us with their next big thing.  Even if it’s only vaporware in the mind of some designer or developer at this moment.
