I used to have one of those shoe deodorizer balls which just masks the smell with some nice scent. Well, here’s one that uses another technology to eliminate shoe odors.
The Shoe Deodorizer doesn’t mask smells with stronger scents. Instead it uses a powerful ionization process to clean the source of the odor. The Shoe Deodorizer runs on the included power adapter or four C batteries.

Turn the switch to “on” and place the Shoe Deodorizer in the shoes to be sanitized. The unit will work for approximately 15 minutes at a time, cycling off for 5 minutes and back on for 3. It produces a safe level of ozone to clean and sanitize the air in that small location. For stubborn odors, allow the unit to remain on for up to 6 hours; after that time, it will shut off automatically.

I believe using the ionization technology is much better. Kill the source and you kill the odor leaving your shoes fresh and clean. It’s the same ionization technology that is being used in car ionizers or your room ionizer but this one works on tight areas such as shoes.
